Riding the C&O Towpath, November 1-4, 2008

Filed under: Photos — rich @ 1:12 pm

Rali and the kids enjoyed a great four-day, 130-mile bike trip on the C&O Towpath from November 1-4. Photos from the trip are here on Rali’s Facebook album, where she’s written up the story of her trip. You don’t need to be a Facebook user to see the photos. They had a great trip! Go over to that link to see the whole batch, but here are just a couple photos from the trail.

Here’s one from Day Three of the trip.

Carmen at the Smithsonian

It’s great living near Washington DC, with easy access to the excellent museums downtown. Here’s Carmen on October 17, at the National Museum of the American Indian, a Smithsonian museum.

Rali and the kids around town

Here are a few photos of Carmen, Kelvin, Kristof, and Rali around Washington DC and northern Virginia in October 2008. First, here’s Carmen at home, shortly after a kids’ crafts class at the apartment complex where we’re living. The necklace she’s wearing is made of Froot Loops, and no, it didn’t last the day!

Carmen makes (and eats) her own jewelry

On Columbus Day, the whole family went out for a bike ride together. We all rode from Falls Church to Rosslyn, then down the Potomac River to National Airport, then Rali rode on to Mount Vernon while Rich and the kids rode home. We stopped along the Potomac to enjoy the view of the monuments in Washington. Behind Kristof are the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument.

Despite all the hustle and bustle of modern life, Carmen always takes time to…never mind, this is too obvious!

These two photos are both from Wednesday, October 15. The boys get out of school early every Wednesday, so Rali and Carmen met them at the bus stop, then they all took the Metro into downtown Washington for a delightful fall afternoon on the National Mall.

UPDATE: Kristof’s first hit!

Filed under: Photos — rich @ 7:21 pm

On Saturday, October 11, against the Rockhounds, Kristof got his very first hit. Luckily, another player’s father caught everything on video. Here’s his full at-bat. The coach awarded him a game ball for his first hit!

Kristof at the bat

Kristof’s been doing better and better in Little League. He’s still hitless for the season, but has had some walks, scored some runs, and had some good at-bats. Here’s how his batting stance has evolved, after just four games:

Now reporting from the U.S. Capitol…

Filed under: Photos — rich @ 3:31 am

On September 21, Rali and the kids visited the excellent Newseum, a fun, interactive journalism museum. Here’s a video Kristof, Kelvin, and Carmen made that day. The Newseum recorded it for us, so we could download it the next day. Here’s our Capitol correspondent:

Claws ‘n’ Paws

Filed under: Photos — rich @ 5:37 am

On July 29, 2008, the whole family went to Claws ‘n’ Paws Animal Park in Hamlin, PA. It’s a family-friendly (although not very stroller-friendly) zoo in the woods, where Kristof, Kelvin, and Carmen got up close and personal with the animals. Here’s Carmen feeding Twiga the giraffe (“Twiga” is Swahili for “giraffe”). Don’t worry about Carmen’s hand disappearing into Twiga’s mouth; Twiga took only the carrot and gave back Carmen’s hand!

Mmmmm...I'll take some hand with that carrot...

Paleontologists were stunned to find something alive inside these dinosaur eggs:

Carmen’s pretty pink dress didn’t stop her from being especially friendly in the petting zoo:

…and Kristof’s first 5K

Filed under: Photos — rich @ 10:40 am

Not to be outdone by Rali’s 5K yesterday, Kristof wanted to do his own race, so we found a 5K for him to do the very next day: the March of Dimes Bolt for Babies in Arlington, VA. Rali ran along with him, but it was Kristof’s race, and he was the first kid to finish. He never walked, and never stopped to rest. Here’s Kristof crossing the finish line right behind Rali:

Carmen and Kelvin were very happy to cheer for Kristof. He was in good shape afterwards, but still had a banana to replenish. He says he can’t wait to do it again!

On Grandma and Grandpa’s pond

Here are the kids on July 24, on a float in the middle of Grandma and Grandpa’s pond in Welcome Lake, Pennsylvania. Grandma and Grandpa live in the house behind the flag. We’re staying in the apartment on the right, behind Kelvin.

En route to the United States…

When we left Calgary on July 22, 2008, Rali and the kids traveled by plane to Pennsylvania while Rich started the long cross-country drive. Here are the kids in Minneapolis Airport:

And while they were there, Kelvin decided to do some shopping:
